Tại Sao Lại Có Tên Là Phố Wall?

Khi ai đó nhắc đến phố Wall, người ta mường tượng ngay đến trung tâm tài chính lớn nhất thế giới. Đây cũng chính là biểu tượng của chủ nghĩa tư bản Mỹ. Tuy nhiên, tại sao phố Wall đầy huyền thoại này lại tên là Phố Wall? 

Đôi nét về phố Wall

Phố Wall (Wall Street) là một con đường nhỏ hẹp dài khoảng 1.1km ở Khu Tài Chính thuộc vùng hạ Manhattan, New York kéo dài từ phía Tây Bắc xuống Đông Nam. Đường này hẹp và ngắn, bắt đầu từ con phố Broadway và kết thúc bằng con phố South Street bên bờ sông East. 

Phố Wall là nơi hội tụ của tất cả các ngân hàng, các quỹ phòng hộ, các nhà giao dịch chứng khoán, các sàn giao dịch như Nasdaq, Amex, Nymex và Nybot. Đây cũng là nơi đặt trụ sở của “Sở Giao dịch Chứng khoán New York” (New York Stock Exchange – NYSE).

Lý giải tên phố Wall?

Tên gọi “phố Wall” được xuất phát từ bức tường gồ mà người Hà Lan xây dựng để bảo vệ họ khỏi sự đấu tranh của những người Anh và người Mỹ bản địa vào thế kỷ 17. Nói chi tiết hơn thì Phố Wall được xây dựng như biên giới phía Bắc khu định cư New Amsterdam của người Hà Lan. Nó được dùng như chiến lũy để ngăn chặn ý đồ xâm lược của người Anh. Sau đó, nhân danh công ty Hà Lan Dutch West India Company, Peter Stuyvesant đã sử dụng các nô lệ châu Phi để củng cố “pháo đài” vững chắc hơn. Một bức tường cao 4 mét được tăng cường để chống lại những cuộc tập kích của các bộ lạc bản xứ Da đỏ. Năm 1685, khu thương mại – tài chính Wall Street hình thành dọc theo bức tường này. Năm 1699, bức tường bị chính quyền thực dân Anh phá dỡ. 

Sau thế chiến thứ nhất phố Wall đã dần dần vượt qua London và trở thành trung tâm tài chính quan trọng nhất của thế giới lúc bấy giờ.

Song song với sự phát triển của thị trường chứng khoán, phố Wall được nhắc đến như là trung tâm tài chính quan trọng nhất nước Mỹ và của cả thế giới trong một khoảng thời gian dài, đến nỗi người ta lấy luôn tên của con phố này để chỉ chung về thị trường tài chính của nước Mỹ. Thị trường này bao gồm rất nhiều các thị trường con như thị trường chứng khoán, thị trường hàng hóa, thị trường trái phiếu, thị trường ngoại hối và thị trường kỳ hạn.

Có thể kết luận rằng, Phố Wall (Wall Street) hay gọi tắt là Wall là biểu tượng cho thị trường tài chính của Mỹ. Mục đích ban đầu của thị trường chứng khoán là gây quỹ cho các công ty phát triển, có lãi và tạo việc làm. Tuy nhiên, giao dịch chứng khoán đã trở nên có lợi nhuận và hoạt động ngày càng sôi nổi, náo nhiệt.

Chính vì vậy mà ngày nay khi nhắc đến “phố Wall” hay “Wall street” thì người ta không chỉ nhắc về một con phố tên là “Wall” ở New York, Mỹ mà còn là nhắc đến cả thị trường tài chính khổng lồ của nước Mỹ.
